This original window looks bad, but is actually in great working condition. The rope and pulley mechanism works great, but it has a lot of wear and tear on the molding. I got the hardware off after a lot of scraping. Usually, I like to use the original hardware, but in this case, it's just too far gone, so I will replace it all with new brass pieces. I continued to scrape and sand, getting it as smooth as possible before painting.

After the first coat of new paint, it was easy to see what still needed fixing. I used wood putty where it was needed, then I sanded it again. Lastly, I applied the final coat of paint, attached the new brass lock and pull, and replaced the electric outlet. The window looks great and opens and locks easily.
