Clearing the Area
The first major step in building my guest house was clearing the area. While it may sound straightforward, this task requires careful planning and effort. I spent a significant amount of time removing debris, old plants, and even some tenacious tree roots that obstructed the space.
I recall standing in the middle of the lot, overwhelmed by the sight of overgrown grass and scattered rocks. But each piece of debris I removed fueled my excitement. For instance, after clearing a patch of stubborn underbrush, I could envision my future guest house. Around 30% of my initial clearing was simply unwanted vegetation that had to go!
Once the area was clear, the transformation was remarkable. Seeing the potential of the land without clutter was thrilling. I could clearly visualize where my guest house would stand, how natural light would filter through the nearby trees, and how I would design the surrounding landscaping.
Building the Stem Wall
With the area cleared, it was time to construct the stem wall. This foundational element is vital for any structure, providing necessary support and stability.

Some of this concrete block is below grade and will be underground. We want to have a couple of layers of brick that run across the bottom, so the blocks are higher than they normally would be so there's something to mortar the bricks to.

Visualizing the Space
Now that the stem wall was built, it became incredibly fulfilling to walk around the space and visualize the space. Instead of just imagining the layout, we could actually see the defined boundaries.
The next step is the underground plumbing and then the slab will be poured.
